“To publish open access” doesn’t necessairly mean “to make something available as open access”. You can publish open access in a journal, but you can also choose a traditional publishing model (eg. subscription-based one) and make your author’s accepted manuscript available in open access.



Green

Green open access is when an author publishes in a subscription-based journal, but a copy of the author’s accepted manuscript is deposited in either an instituional (such as IRIS) or subject-based repository.

advantages:
+ THE AAM OR VOR OF THE PAPER IS FREELY AVAILABLE TO ANYONE.
+ compliance with funder mandates to publish open access.
+ THERE IS NO FEE TO BE PAID TO THE PUBLISHER.
+ the choice of the right journal for publication is completely free.

disadvantages:
– if you are not a CORRESPONDING AUTHOR of the article, you could not retain the author’s accepted manuscript (AAM).
– THE AAM has not yet had the publisher’s layout and typesetting applied.

Diamond

Diamond open access is when an article is published in a fully open access journal.

As opposed to gold OA, there is no charge to be paid in diamond OA.

advantages:
+ anyone can freely read, distribute, download, etc. your article.
+ compliance with funder mandates to publish open access.
+ it is free.
+ ThERE is A HIGH NUMBER OF diamond oa journals (between 17,000 and 29,000 according to science europe), they publish in different languages.

disadvantages:
– diamond oa journals are less popular and prestigious than hybrid ones.

Gold

Gold open access is when an article is published in a fully open access journal.

Differently from diamond OA, gold OA requires an Article Processing Charge (APC).

advantages:
+ anyone can freely read, distribute, download, etc. your article.
+ compliance with funder mandates to publish open access.
+ most funders reimburse the corresponding costs.

disadvantages:
– some gold oa journals may be predatory.

Red (Hybrid)

Red (or hybrid) open access is when an article is published in a subscription-based journal, offering open access publication for individual articles.

An APC must be paid.

advantages:
+ anyone can freely read, distribute, download, etc. your article.
+ compliance with funder mandates to publish open access.

disadvantages:
– not all funders reimburse the corresponding costs.

Bronze

Bronze open access means that your article is made free-to-read on the publisher website, without an explicit open license.

advantages:
+ anyone can freely read, distribute, download, etc. your article.

disadvantages:
– NON-compliance with funder mandates to publish open access.
– due to lack of license, the article reuse is potentially illegal.

Black

Black open access means that your article is made available on pirate sites or other network without permission from the copyright owner.

advantages:
+ anyone can freely read, distribute, download, etc. your article.

disadvantages:
– NON-compliance with funder mandates to publish open access.
– the release is usually illicit (E.g. on pirate sites).
