The costs of subscriptions to scientific journals have consistently increased over the years, despite the advent of the Internet. At the same time, the high demand for publishing in open access has led to an increase in open access publications, along with their associated costs. Unimore spends approximately 3.5 million euros annually, covering both read and publish costs.

SBA Unimore spends approximately 2 million euros per year on subscriptions to periodicals and scientific databases (around 200,000 titles).
The individual libraries spend an additional 300,000 euros on specific electronic journals, 500,000 euros on print journals, and 150,000 euros on monographs.
The Departments spend an additional 65,000 euros.
ALMOST 800,000 ARE ONLY FOR THE PUBLISHER ELSEVIER. THE NATURE GROUP RECEIVES ALMOST 100,000 EUROS, AND IEEE 75,000.

Unimore spends approximately 350,000 euros per year on open access publications, edition contracts, and related editorial services.
The expenditure for publishing open access has tripled in the five-year period from 2017 to 2021.
In 2021, 55% of the expenditure is with gold open access publishers, and the remaining with hybrid publishers.
In 2021, 80% of the total expenditure for open access is allocated to the biomedical field.

Read & Publish
380,000 €/year
Unimore spends approximately 380,000 euros per year on “read & publish” contracts with ACS, Cambridge UP, Emerald, Lippincott and Wiley.
the contracts last from 3 to 5 years and are entered into by care-crui. the principle is that the “READ” quota progressively makes way to the “PUBLISH” quota.
the distribution of vouchers for open access among universities is not predetermined. therefore, the convenience of these contracts is not guaranteed for each university.
the data proceedes by crui (Conference of Italian universities rectors) indicates that there are come universities that derive significat advantages from these contracts, while others find them to be disadvantageous.
